Grupo Mayan Resorts: Windsurfing 101

The Grupo Mayan water sports experts offer wind surfing instruction to beginning windsurfers during their Grupo Mayan holiday. Experienced windsurfers are able to reserve equipment and windsurf at their leisure.

Both beginners and experts must understand the basics of windsurfing equipment. This basic information is shared by our instructors during beginner’s classes. The Grupo Mayan water sport pros will instruct you on the proper use of:
• The board. The board is the main piece of equipment on a rig. It has a fin on the back and must be sturdy enough to hold your weight. A fin is located on the back of the board and is used to navigate.
• The sail. The sail is used to move the board. Just like a sail on a sailboat, the wind will catch and propel the board forward in the water. The Grupo Mayan water sport pros use a basic medium size sail, which works well for beginners and experienced windsurfers.
• The harness. This piece of equipment is necessary to control the direction of the rig. It attaches to the sail and will help with catching the wind.
• The mast is the pole that attaches to the board. The sail is attached to the mast.
Beginner’s classes at the resorts of the Grupo Mayan start with an understanding of the basic equipment. Once you understand how to use this equipment you will be allowed to test it in the water. Our instructors will lead you to an area of shallow water for your first attempts. You must learn to balance on the board and how to keep your balance when the wind is caught by the sail and the board skims across the water.
Along with instruction the Grupo Mayan resorts offer windsurfing equipment for the use of our guests. It is very difficult to travel with windsurfing equipment and recreational windsurfers will find our windsurfing rigs to be very adequate. Please reserve both equipment and class time in advance.
