Grupo Mayan resorts: What is this Thing Called Kneeboarding?

January 30th, 2009

The Grupo Mayan water sport professionals know that our guests love to participate in all types of water sports. One very popular water sport, according to the Grupo Mayan pros is kneeboarding.  What is kneeboarding and how did it get started?  The Grupo Mayan pros have some answers.

Kneeboarding began in Southern California when a group of local surfers decided to tie homemade “knee/belly boards” behind a boat and see if they could be pulled while on the board.  This occurred, say the Grupo Mayan pros, about thirty five years ago.  The new sport was originally called surf skiing and gradually caught on in other areas as word spread from Southern California bout this new “sport”.  By 1965, companies were beginning to produce boards, basically shortened surf boards that could be pulled behind boats.

The first successful knee board to be marketed was the Hydro slide. These knee boards were much heavier than ones you will find in stores today.  They were shaped like huge teardrops and had straps for your knees and pads to put your knees on.  The Grupo Mayan staff says that todai’s knee boards have been designed to offer better performance and help prevent injuries.

Many water ski companies now also make and market knee boards.  They come in many sizes and colors and also are available in a multitude of shapes and sizes. There are specific boards for people new to the sport and advanced kneeboarders.

Within the past twenty years, say the Grupo Mayan pros, knee boarding has become a competitive sport.  In the mid 1980’s the American Kneeboard Association was founded and sanctions competitions throughout the world for competitive kneeboarders.

According to the Grupo Mayan water sport pros, the water sport of knee boarding has become very popular.  There are thousands of kneeboard enthusiasts all over the world.  Kneeboard competitions have become as popular as water ski competitions.  Kneeboarders do many similar tricks to water skiers, making them look extremely difficult.  Kneeboard competitions are fun to watch and it is something the whole family can enjoy.
