Grupo Mayan Resorts: Water Sports Safety

January 29th, 2009

The Grupo Mayan resorts are well known for all of the fabulous water sport options we offer our guests.  From jet skiing and scuba diving to swimming and boating, you will find a water sport sure to please you and your family at a Grupo Mayan Resort.

One of the primary concerns of all Grupo Mayan staff members is the safety of our guests.  Water sports require specific safety regulations in order for everyone to enjoy them and stay safe.  The Grupo Mayan staff has a few tips on keeping yourself and others safe when participating in water sports.

All water sports have a certain risk factor.  Swimming in the ocean, a calm and relaxing water sport, can at times be dangerous if the swimmer is not prepared for anything that arises.  Boating and jet skiing have well known dangers and so do many other water sports.  It is important, say the Grupo Mayan professionals, to be aware of any hidden dangers in the water sport in which you are participating.

Each water sport has its own particular dangers and safety rules.  Some water sports even have laws regarding the safety of participants.  The Grupo Mayan staff urges you to become familiar with all laws and safety measures for the water sports you enjoy.  What may seem like a waste of time could be potentially lifesaving in certain conditions.

According to the Grupo Mayan water sport professionals, there is a code of responsibility for people participating in water sports.  By becoming familiar with this code you will not only be safer on the water, others will benefit from your responsible behavior.

Everyone who participates in a water sport should not only be familiar with the safety regulations but also be familiar with the equipment required for the sport.   If you are boating it will be necessary to know all the features of the boat you are using and how to use them.  Even if you are not driving the boat it will be important to know how to use the equipment in case an emergency arises.

Know the water where you will be enjoying your water sports, say the Grupo Mayan pros.  You will not want to water ski or boat in shallow waters and you will want to make sure you are scuba diving in safe waters.  While at any Grupo Mayan resort, our staff will help you become familiar with the characteristics of the water surrounding the resort before you participate in any water sport.

Never go in the water alone.  This is a rule you are probably familiar with but you may have always applied it to swimming.  The Grupo Mayan pros say that all water sports should be enjoyed with at least two people for your safety. If you are boating you will want to have at least three people participating in the sport.  A driver, the person skiing, and a person in the boat to serve as a watcher are all required for a safe waterskiing trip.

All water sport participants, say the Grupo Mayan pros, should wear a Coast Guard approved life vest at all times.  A life vest will keep you afloat during any unforeseen emergencies while on the water.  The only water sport that does not require a life vest is scuba diving.  In scuba diving you will wear a scuba diving vest that can be inflated if needed.  While you are in the boat in route to your diving destination you should wear a Coast Guard approved life vest.

The Grupo Mayan staff hopes that the above water sport safety advice will be helpful to you whether you are enjoying water sports at any one of our luxurious Grupo Mayan resorts, or if you are participating in water sports at home.
