Grupo Mayan Resorts: Underwater Exploration

April 27th, 2009

The coasts of Mexico are known for their assorted species of sea turtles that is one of the main attractions for our guests here at Grupo Mayan resorts. These magnificent creatures use these coasts and islands as areas for breeding, feeding and rearing their offspring.

Our guests get this rare chance of seeing these animals in their natural habitat as well as diving and swimming with them underwater through snorkeling or scuba diving. Aside from these sea turtles, the turquoise-blue waters are also home to a wide variety of animal and plant life including several colorful species of fish and other aquatic creatures.

Underwater exploration is one of the main attractions in Grupo Mayan resorts that tourists and guests keep coming back for. Underwater exploration can be done through snorkeling, which requires minimal gear and is easier and less physically demanding, or through scuba diving, which requires sophisticated gear and some additional skills and training. Whatever options our Grupo Mayan guests choose, our staff will be there to assist them with their needs and resources and have an underwater adventure that will provide memories to last a lifetime.

One of the favorite destinations for snorkelers or scuba divers are parts if the ocean with the halocline effect. This rare phenomena and environment is created when fresh water from underground springs meets salt water from the ocean. According to Grupo Mayan experts, only certain species of plant and animal life survive in such environment, where the water itself has a different change in appearance. Species living here are not found anywhere else in the world and is quite an attraction for tourists that they have been shown on many travel channels for several years until now.

Some lagoons in Mexico offer a different underwater attraction according to Grupo Mayan experts. Aside from the mangroves and the unusual marine life in these areas, many divers and snorkelers find ancient fossils an attraction in itself. These fossils date back to Mayan civilizations and these cannot be found in other parts of the world.

Underwater exploration is not limited during the day. Many of our guests at Grupo Mayan resorts find snorkeling and diving after the sun comes down even more exciting. Many species of animal life are nocturnal, meaning they come out only during nighttime to feed.
Examples are the various varieties of octopus that feeds in the dark.
Divers find them very attractive when they see them change colors when the light from an underwater flashlight is directed at them. Some plant and animal life have their inherent bioluminescence that give off a glowing internal light that is a remarkable sight. Explorers from Grupo Mayan resorts who are used to daytime diving find this a different sight indeed. These night crawlers and animal life that comes out at night are safe even for snorkelers.
