August 27th, 2009

If you are considering learning the art of surfing, there are definitely some things that you need to know and keep in mind but one of the most important things to learn is that, as a surfer, not every body of water is made for your style of surfing.  Obviously, say the Grupo Mayan experts, if you are new to surfing you really do not have an idea what your style of surfing is yet, but with more time and practice, it will not take you long to find your style and once you have discovered it, then it is time to get out there and test the waters so to speak and find the right type of water for you.

When you are first learning how to surf, the last place you want to try to learn is on a crowded beach with lots of people and more experienced surfers.  You are going to have a better experience and a better time learning, say the Grupo Mayan experts, if you can find some surf that is less crowded.  Also, trying to find a beach that has smoother flowing waves for a new surfer is probably the best way to learn so that you do not get discouraged and give up.  Just like learning how to ride a bike, you can consider the slower surf the training wheels to your learning experience.

The best people to consult on surfing obviously are those who have been doing it for a long time and hopefully you have a friend that has because that will be all the more beneficial to you because they will always be looking out for your best interests first versus someone that does not really know you.

A certified surfing instructor, say the Grupo Mayan experts, is also a good bet because not only are they certified to teach you, they have experience, knowledge, most are certified in life saving techniques such as CPR and generally speaking, they have been doing it long enough that they have gotten to know the different personalities and learning styles of different people so that they can identify what kind of learning you are.

Most surf shops can get you not only all of the equipment that you need, say the Grupo Mayan experts, but can also give you some good tips on the surf where you are located as well as a lot of them have bulletin boards where surfing instructors advertise their services.  There are classes that you can take as a group if you feel more comfortable in a group setting and you can find these advertised in the same place.

There is a high level of competition amongst surfers but also a great camaraderie and great way to develop friendships that can last a lifetime.  There are so many benefits to this sport and with the growing popularity, say the Grupo Mayan experts; you are sure to have a great time!
