Grupo Mayan Resorts: Snorkel Equipment

January 1st, 2009

A wonderful way to experience the warm coastal waters of the Grupo Mayan Mexican resorts is by snorkeling.  Our waters are home to lively and colorful fish and thousands of varieties of coral.

Snorkeling is a wonderful way to enjoy your time in the water. Snorkeling will allow you to view the underwater scenery and marine life close to the surface with the use of a snorkel. Our Grupo Mayan professionals say that the right scuba equipment will have you in the water and enjoying all there is to see immediately. Snorkeling may just be one of the best experiences of your Grupo Mayan vacation.

Here are some tips on basic snorkeling equipment.

A diving mask.  The diving mask will allow you to view underwater environments without the water straining or irritating your eyes. Choose one that fits your face well. You will want to adjust the strap so that is sits comfortably on your face.  You do not want it so tight that it hurts or so loose that water pours in through the sides. The mask should not put any strain on your cheeks. There are two-in-one, (mask and snorkel), packages that are very cost efficient.  Special masks are available in childrens sizes.
Swim fins. Purchasing swim fins or diving fins is dependent on how often you intend to snorkel. If you want to swim longer distances and view coral reefs, investing on a pair of fins will help improve your snorkeling experience. Snorkel or dive fins will help you move in the water and increase fluidity. Your fins will also help you counter the drag that causes you to be less flexible while snorkeling.
Snorkel. You can’t go snorkeling without a snorkel. The snorkel allows you to breathe underwater and remain at a shallow depth to enjoy the underwater scenery. Some diving masks may already be outfitted with a snorkel, so choose one that is light enough for you to carry along on your Grupo Mayan vacation. Also, choose a snorkel with minimal strap attachments to prevent tangles with other objects when you are in the water.
Wetsuit. Some snorkelers like to use a wetsuit.  The wetsuit will keep you warm in cooler waters and protect your back from the sun.  It will also help prevent abrasions from objects under the water.  The Grupo Mayan pros do not advise guests to use a wetsuit while snorkeling.  The waters surrounding our Grupo Mayan resorts are warm and a good waterproof sunscreen will keep you from burning.  You will have much more freedom during your dive without a wetsuit.
You will discover that snorkeling is a fantastic way to learn about underwater environments.  You will see beautiful and exotic marine life and bright tropical coral right off of the Grupo Mayan shores. Our professionals are onsite and will be happy to help you learn to use your equipment.

Snorkeling is a great family water sport.  As mentioned, you can purchase snorkeling equipment in all sizes.  Make sure to include a snorkeling adventure in your Grupo Mayan vacation plans.
