Grupo Mayan Resorts: Safety Swimming Tips

August 3rd, 2009

Undoubtedly, swimming is one of the most relaxing and leisurely things to do but it can also be one of the best workouts for you too.  As with any sport, say the Grupo Mayan experts, safety is always a factor and this article is going to give you some tips on how to remain safe when you are swimming.

One of the first things you are going to want to make sure of is that you are never alone when you go swimming.  It is so much safer to have someone with you because you never know what could happen while you are in the water.  You might get a muscle cramp and not be able to keep yourself afloat and this is a prime example for when having someone there to help you could save your life.

You may have already discovered that just because it is 85 degrees outside, this does not mean that every body of water you may want to get into is going to be anywhere near that warm.  It is important to know, say the Grupo Mayan experts, how to let your body adjust to those colder water temperatures before just diving in.  Sometimes a wetsuit is even called for especially when the air temperature is warm.  A dry suit might be too hot for warm days and this is why I recommend a wetsuit instead.  Earplugs are a good thing too and make sure that you enter the water slowly and take your time letting your body get adjusted to the temperature of the water.  If it is extremely cold, you need to condition your body into getting used to it so taking small trips into the water for short periods of time off and on is best.

When you get out of the water and it has been cold, you should take off your wetsuit as soon as possible and drink warm fluids and put warm clothes on, say the Grupo Mayan experts.  When it is sunny or cloudy you should always make sure you apply sunscreen especially to the exposed areas of skin like your face, nose specifically.

If you happen to be swimming in the ocean, be aware of the seaweed.  Your feet and legs could get caught up in the seaweed and the weight of the seaweed can actually cause you to go under, say the Grupo Mayan experts, so as soon as you notice you might have some clinging to your body, get rid of it as fast as you can.

Of course, you should always be mindful of the weather as well.  Never swim during a lightning storm.  This seems like a silly piece of advice, say the Grupo Mayan pros, but necessary because so many people think they are immune to things such as this happening but it can and does happen more frequently than you would think.

These tips should allow you to enjoy swimming more safely as well as help you keep an eye on the people around you who do not think about these things.  Since your awareness is raised, you yourself just might be a life saver.
