If you thought that only tranquil lake waters or whitewaters were appropriate for kayaking you are in for a treat. Kayaking can be enjoyed on many different types of water. While whitewater kayaking is better known, ocean kayaking is another great way to enjoy kayaking. Ocean kayaking is gaining fans every day.
The professions at the Grupo Mayan resorts will be glad to instruct you in the use of ocean kayaks and give you pointers and tips to make the sport fun for you. They offer the following advice to those of you considering ocean kayaking while on vacation with Grupo Mayan.
- The ocean kayak. Ocean kayaks are different from the kayaks you might have seen around freshwater. They are somewhat longer than kayaks used for whitewater kayaking. An ocean kayak can be as long as 15 feet and must have enough capacity in the stern to keep it moving. The long size of the ocean kayak will accommodate additional gear that you may require while on the ocean. The ocean kayak is built so it can be easily maneuvered over rough and choppy ocean waters. Some ocean kayaks are outfitted with spray skirts for water proofing. They also have rudders which aid in navigation
- Staying safe while kayaking. There is a difference in kayaking on a lake and in the ocean. You must learn the basics of ocean kayaking before you get into the water. The Grupo Mayan staff will be glad to help as you prepare for your first ocean kayaking adventure. You must always ensure that your gear is in good condition and everything floats. If you are carrying any gear that does not float make sure to store it in containers that float. Water will enter your kayak while you are on the ocean so make sure your storage containers are also waterproof.
- You must wear a personal flotation device, better known as a life jacket. No matter what your skill level in swimming it is imperative to wear a life vest at all times while you are in the ocean kayak. Your life vest should have pockets to guarantee that you can carry items with you on the water.
Finding the right ocean kayak shouldn´t be a problem. Your Grupo Mayan resort will have ocean kayaks onsite and you will receive instruction on their use. We will also have most of the gear necessary for kayaking onsite as well.
If you plan to try ocean kayaking before your Grupo Mayan vacation make sure the kayak you use is an ocean kayak. Ocean kayaks have a different structure and you should never attempt to use a freshwater kayak in the ocean.
