Grupo Mayan Resorts: Learn to Kayak
February 17th, 2009
The Grupo Mayan staff is home to some of the best water sports in Mexico. Many of our guests come to our luxurious Grupo Mayan resorts specifically for our water sports. Kayaking, one of the water sports we offer, is very popular all over the world. If you are interested in learning to kayak the Grupo Mayan pros have some tips for you on choosing the right equipment.
Investing in kayaking equipment can be expensive. The Grupo Mayan water sport pros say that it is okay to invest in used equipment if it is in good condition. Work with the professional staff at your local outfitter to find the right equipment for you. There are several items that are essential for the beginning kayaker.
You will need a kayak. The type of water you will be kayaking in will determine what type of kayak you need. There are different kayaks for fresh water and ocean water.
You will also need a paddle, say the Grupo Mayan pros. The outfitter where you purchase your kayak will also help you pick the appropriate paddle for your kayak. Each type of kayak has a certain type of paddle that is needed.
A personal floatation device is essential. A life jacket or life vest will offer you protection in case of an unforeseen emergency.
Every kayak needs a spray skirt. The spray skirt keeps water out of the kayak. If you plan to kayak in the ocean or in whitewater the spray skirt is a must have accessory. The Grupo Mayan staff says that if you plan to kayak in other types of water you do not have to have a spray skirt but you are still urged to use one.
Every kayaker will need to purchase and wear a helmet. Helmets are not “required” by law but it would be a bad choice to kayak without one. A helmet could save you from potentially fatal head injuries resulting from a crash.
There is other equipment for the kayaker that is not essential, says the Grupo Mayan pros, but will come in handy.
A dry suit or wet suit will keep you comfortable in the water. Which type you buy depends on the water you will be kayaking.
Booties are available for kayakers to keep feet dry and to help avoid scratches and abrasions.
Gloves are a great idea for all kayakers; say the Grupo Mayan water sports professionals. They will keep you warm and help you avoid scrapes and blisters.
The Grupo Mayan staff hopes that the above advice will come in handy as you purchase your first kayaking gear. Remember to utilize the knowledge of sales clerks at your local outfitter. Many of the sales clerks are probably kayakers themselves and can give you advice based on their own experiences.
On your next Grupo Mayan vacation the water sports team at your Grupo Mayan resort will be happy to offer you more kayaking tips. We hope to paddle with you soon.
