Grupo Mayan Tips on Surfing

October 28th, 2009

One of the hardest things to swallow when you are learning how to surf is your pride.  If you cannot let go of your pride and humility and just get out there and do your best, this might not be the sport for you.  You must always keep in mind that everyone was a beginner at some point, say the Grupo Mayan professionals, and not only did they make the mistakes that you probably will make or have some not-so-pleasant instances happen to them that you will have, but they probably have made some mistakes that you will never make if you arm yourself with some good knowledge of the sport and safety tips before you even hit the water.

There are an awful lot of surfers that are actually self taught and while this is commendable, they probably would not have suffered some of the more embarrassing moments or made some of the more common mistakes in the beginning if they had been taught by a professional from the start.

Finding a surf instructor, according to the Grupo Mayan experts, is the best thing you could possibly do for yourself when you are venturing into this water sport because there are a lot of good times to be had, but when dealing with the deep vast ocean, there are also a lot of dangers to be aware of and who better to know those than someone who is well versed in the sport of surfing.

When you are first learning the sport, it can be quite frustrating at times but you should give it a fair shot.  Grupo Mayan pros always recommend giving it at least 1 month and at least 3 practice sessions a week in that month before you make any drastic decisions to give it up.  Especially if you are with an instructor, they will help keep you motivated and give you positive feedback, but all of the great feedback in the world is not going to help if you do not believe in yourself.

Make sure that you are choosing the right place to surf.  Another good technique according to the Grupo Mayan experts, is to just sit on the beach and watch the more experienced surfers go at it for a day.
You might be able to catch and pick up on some tips and tricks that will help you find your own style of surfing and you will also see that even the pros make many mistakes and do not always get it right on every wave they try to catch.  You can also watch some of the other surfers that are just as new at it as you are and then try to critique yourself from watching them.  If you see them make a mistake you ask yourself if you have the same problem making those same mistakes and figure out a way to fix it.
Sometimes, we are better at watching other people make mistakes and learn better from others mistakes than we do our own.

The most important thing to remember is that this is fun!  Make it a fun times, say the Grupo Mayan experts, learn how to laugh in the face of challenge and frustration and in no time you will be the one out there being watched and learned from.
