Grupo Mayan Surfing Tips for the Beginner

November 12th, 2009

A great water sport that you can enjoy while on vacation is surfing.  Surfing is easy to do and everyone can do it.  Surfboards are meant to float on the water.  If you are just beginning or have never done surfing before, you just have to remember a few simple tips.

You have to lie on the board and find your balance point.  Grupo Mayan professionals recommend that you mark the perfect spot with a magic marker or a small amount of wax.  This will provide you with a point of reference for you to place your chin on the board each time you get ready to mount the board and attempt to stand up.  If the board begins to dig into the water, you have to adjust your chin back to compensate.  If you have too much weight in the back, the board could cork.  You will not be able to catch a wave if the board is corked.

Grupo Mayan professionals recommend that when you are paddling, do not use both of your arms at the same time.  If you do so, the board will speed up and slow down.  By alternating your arms, you can help to maintain the speed in the water.  When you are ready to sit up on the board, your first few times may be scary.  The board may wobble until you learn that the less movement you do will help to reduce this wobble.

Beginners at surfing will find that standing up is one of the hardest parts of learning to surf.  Grupo Mayan professionals recommend that you lie on your chest, keep your head up and looking ahead, place your hands on the board as you are going to do a pushup.  Push up as you sweep your feet under you.  Keep your weight centered and begin to stand up.  You might feel as you are going to fall but you will find that you can do it with care and with more practice.

Safety is important for any beginner who wants to surf.  Use a nose guard to help protect you if you hit the board with your face.  In the beginning, you might want to wear a vest, t-shirts and a rash guard to help prevent rashes.  Grupo Mayan sports professionals recommend that you try to surf with someone else (buddy system) to ensure you have someone to fall back on for help in case you get hurt.
