Grupo Mayan Staying Safe in the Water
November 3rd, 2009
Many beautiful beaches and clear waters can be found by many of the best resorts in the world. Grupo Mayan professionals want you to be safe if you decide to go swimming in the water. Water accidents can happen very quickly but fortunately, most of them can be avoided with some simple safety knowledge.
You should avoid swimming in the water if you are not a strong swimmer. Many oceans have rip currents that can grab someone and quickly pull them away from the beach. Rip currents often form along piers and jetties. Avoid these in order to stay away from dangerous rip currents. If you are caught in a rip current, try to swim horizontally along the beach until the pull stops and you can swim back to the beach. If you cannot swim along the beach, try to tread water and wave down a lifeguard for help.
The number one rule when swimming is never to swim alone. You never know when something might happen and with at least one other person around, your chances of receiving help are much higher. Any children that may be present should be watched very closely. Even if there is a lifeguard present, keep an eye on your children. A lifeguard may have many people to watch and may not be able to watch everyone. Do not count on flotation devices like rafts to keep you safe. If you lose the raft, you are in trouble.
Avoid alcohol and swimming. Very few things go together with alcohol safely. If you are drinking, stay out of the water. Always listen to the advice and instructions of a lifeguard. They are there to help and protect you. If you see any hazardous situations, please help the lifeguard by letting him or her know about the problem. Grupo Mayan lifeguards appreciate any help you can provide. If you are in trouble, wave or call for help.
Protect your feet, head and neck when you go swimming. If you are unfamiliar with the area, enter feet first. Never turn your back on the ocean. The ocean can be very dangerous and you could be swept away before you realize the trouble you are in. Swimming is a great recreational sport to do when you are vacationing. Follow the simple rules and tips provided by Grupo Mayan professionals and you should be able to have a great time swimming in the ocean.
