Grupo Mayan Boating Safety Tips for Beginners

November 10th, 2009

While visiting you favorite resort or vacation spot, you might wish to take a boat out on the water.  It could be a sailboat or perhaps something a little larger.  No matter which type of boat you choose, Grupo Mayan safety professionals recommend that you follow these important safety tips.

The most important rule for going out on the water in any type of boat is to use a lifejacket at all times.  A personal floatation device may be substituted as long as it has been approved by the Department of Transportation or the Coast Guard.  You might wonder why people who take a cruise are not required to wear a lifejacket all the time.  The reason is that a ship is large enough that it should not be easily overturned.  Boats are smaller and can be overturned.  For this reason, the lifejacket is essential to your safety when on a boat.

Even though you might think it is okay to relax and have some alcohol while you are out boating, you should not.  Alcohol impairs your ability to make decisions and it should be avoided.  You want to operate the boat at a safe speed and manner and alcohol can impair your ability to do so.  Be sure you use the proper lights if you are traveling in the dark and exercise more caution to avoid endangering yourself and the others on the boat.

If you have children on the boat, you have to be extra careful to ensure their safety.  Make sure an adult is always available to supervise the children.  Grupo Mayan professionals recommend that you exercise the same courtesy that you would want others to do for you.  Follow all boating rules and observe what others may be doing in the water.  Avoid standing in a small boat as you may cause it to capsize.  If the boat is large, you still have to be careful when standing or walking around that you are aware of your surroundings and objects that could knock you down into the water.

No matter how much experience you may have in boating, a beginner or an expert needs to remember not to overload your boat.  Be sure you do not overload your boat with people either.  Keep a safe distance from other boats and people in the water.  Create a checklist to be sure that you have all the equipment you need before beginning your boating adventures.
