These include mask or snorkel flooding, pressure build-up on the ear canals, and low water visibility due to silt. Contact with corals can also create cuts in hands and legs, and there is the danger or sea urchins and eels. Yet, these minor hazards are not serious or deterrent enough to keep enthusiasts to enjoy this water activity.

Great snorkeling destinations can be found all across the globe, as long as the water is calm enough not to cause any snorkel flooding. These destinations also have an abundant aquatic life for underwater sightseeing to be enjoyable. There are many people adventurous enough to engage in nocturnal snorkeling because exciting marine life can be observed at night. Snorkelers use a bright underwater torch to see underwater. They also have a chemical light tied around the waist so passing boats will be able to see them.
