Grupo Mayan Resorts: Enjoy an Ocean Swim
October 28th, 2008
The wonderful Grupo Mayan resorts located throughout Mexico are surrounded by the warm ocean waters of the tropic. While you are our guest can enjoy an energizing daybreak swim or experience a tranquil sunset floating in the waters off our coast. You can enjoy swimming in the lovely Grupo Mayan waters at all times of the day.
The ocean, while enchanting, can at times be dangerous. The Grupo Mayan staff encourages you to take precautions while swimming in the ocean waters surrounding our resorts. It is important to respect the power of the ocean and understand that safe practices can help alleviate the risks of ocean swimming.
If you will be swimming while at any of the Grupo Mayan resorts make sure you are a competent swimmer. It is okay for anyone to wade in ankle-deep water along the beach, but the Grupo Mayan staff advises that if you want to swim in the ocean you should be comfortable in the water.
If you are a good swimmer and plan to swim in our beautiful oceans while on vacation, the Grupo Mayan professionals encourage you to have some basic knowledge of ocean swimming to ensure your safety. One of the most important things to remember is to swim on a beach with a lifeguard on duty. Our beaches are patrolled by lifeguards during the day. Never swim in the ocean without a lifeguard on duty. Lifeguards are trained rescuers, so if you find yourself in trouble, wave towards shore to get their attention. You will need to get the lifeguardís attention if you find you are too exhausted and cannot swim to shore, if you panic and feel you are not able to stay afloat, or if you feel you are caught in a riptide and cannot get back to shore.
A riptide is a current of water moving in a seaward direction and is one of the biggest dangers faced by swimmers in the ocean. A riptide can be very strong and take a swimmer out into the ocean to an unsafe distance from shore. It’s best to avoid the ocean when there are conditions that can produce a riptide. The Grupo Mayan lifeguards will inform you if there is a dangerous riptide when you are near the water. You will be advised to avoid swimming in the ocean until water conditions improve.
If you are caught in a riptide, don’t panic. Swim parallel to the shoreline to attempt and get out of the riptide by angling your body slightly toward the shore. You should immediately signal to shore for a lifeguard or for anyone on the beach to get help.
Swimming in the tranquil ocean waters of the Grupo Mayan resorts might be the most memorable part of your Grupo Mayan vacation. Just remember that if you are ever in trouble, let the lifeguards know. They are prepared to help you stay safe and have a fabulous vacation!
